vascular lesions
Vascular lesions can happen anywhere on the body.

What are vascular lesions?

Vascular lesions are abnormal clusters of blood vessels that can occur anywhere on the body.  They are often red, purple, or blue and can appear as a patch, spot, or bump on the skin.

What causes vascular lesions?

Depending on the type of vascular lesion, there are many causes of why people develop vascular lesions.

These include:

  • Trauma: vascular lesions can develop as a result of physical injuries, such as a cut or bruise.
  • Genetics: certain types of vascular lesions, such as haemangiomas and port-wine stains, may be hereditary.
  • Infections: certain infections, such as hepatitis B and C, can cause liver damage, leading to vascular lesions.
  • Ageing: our blood vessels may become more fragile with age, increasing the risk of vascular lesions.
  • Radiation exposure: radiation therapy used to treat cancer may increase the risk of developing vascular lesions.
  • Chronic diseases: certain chronic diseases, such as diabetes, can damage blood vessels and increase the risk of vascular lesions.

What are the symptoms of vascular lesions?

Several different types of vascular lesions cause different symptoms.

These include:

  • Hemangiomas: benign tumours that consist of a collection of small blood vessels. They are often present at birth or develop in the first few weeks of life.
  • Port-wine stains: flat, reddish-purple birthmarks that are caused by a capillary malformation in the skin.
  • Telangiectasias: small, dilated blood vessels that can appear as red or purple lines on the skin, often seen on the face, legs, and chest.
  • Spider veins: small clusters of blood vessels that appear as red, blue, or purple lines on the legs or face.
  • Venous lakes: small, blue, or purple papules that form on the lips or ears.

Is Vascular lesions painful?

Vascular lesions can be painful depending on the severity and location of the lesion. Some types such as haemangiomas or port-wine stains may not cause any pain or discomfort.

However, other vascular lesions, such as venous malformations or arteriovenous malformations, can cause significant pain or discomfort due to the increased blood flow to the affected area. Vascular lesions located in certain areas, such as the fingers or toes, can be particularly painful because of the sensitivity of the skin and nerves in those areas.
